Your Virginia Primary Elections FAQs

On Tuesday June 11, Virginia voters will go to the polls to vote in the state’s primary elections. There are 16 state Senate primary elections, 19 House of Delegates primaries and several local elections around the Commonwealth.

In advance of Tuesday’s primaries, The Dogwood has put together answers to common election day FAQs.

Q. How do I know if I’m registered to vote?

Q. If I’m not registered to vote, is it too late to register?

Unfortunately, yes. The deadline to register for the June 11 primaries was May 20. But you should still register, because the November elections are coming up fast.

Q. How do I know if there are elections in my district?

You can find a full list of Tuesday’s Democratic and Republican primaries here. You can also check your local county website.

Q. Where do I go to vote?

Your polling place is determined based on you home address. You can view your designated polling location here. Note: For your vote to count, you need to be at the correct polling place.

Q. What hours are the polls open?

The polls will be open from 6:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Election Day. As long as you are in line by 7:00 p.m., you will be allowed to vote.

Q. Do I need to bring Photo ID?

Yes. Virginia law requires voters to show acceptable Photo ID to vote in person. Acceptable forms of ID include a Virginia driver’s license, a Virginia DMV-issued photo ID, a United States passport, and an employer-issued photo ID. The full list of acceptable forms of ID can be found here.

If you don’t have an acceptable photo ID, simply go to your nearest voter registration office to get one for free. Photo IDs can be used to vote up to one year after the ID has expired.

Q. Do I need to bring anything else?

Nope!

Q. What if I show up to my polling location and I’m not on the voter list?

An election officer will direct you to register and vote provisionally.

Q. Do I have to vote in person on election day or can I vote absentee?

If you meet the requirements for voting absentee and have applied for an absentee ballot, you can vote absentee. Otherwise, you must vote in person on Tuesday.
