Chesterfield County will officially break ground on a new 31,000-square-foot animal shelter on May 27, 2025.
In early May, Chesterfield County began construction on a state-of-the-art animal shelter designed to expand capacity and improve services provided to the community’s animals and those who seek to adopt.
The facility will increase from 10,430 square feet to 30,990 square feet the footprint of the county’s animal shelter. It will include a full veterinary and surgical center, separate lobbies for intake and adoption, indoor meet-and-greet rooms, laundry area, large capacity food and storage supply and more.
The outdoor space will include 10 covered dog runs and two designated meet-and-greet yards for animal exercise and adoption interactions. A 1,400-square-foot barn will support additional outdoor housing needs.
To ensure animals are safely and humanely housed, all animal enclosures in the new facility will be on a single level, eliminating the need for double-stacked dog runs. Stainless steel cages with internal plumbing will offer durability, improved hygiene and the flexibility to replace individual units as needed.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of October 2026.
The public is invited to Chesterfield County’s official groundbreaking ceremony on May 27 at 11 a.m. It will be held at the site of the new facility, 9531 Government Center Parkway, which is directly behind the current shelter. Follow Chesterfield County Animal Shelter on Facebook for future parking and other event details.
The Chesterfield Animal Shelter is open for adoptions by appointment only, Monday-Friday, 10:30 a.m.-5 p.m. or Saturday, 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Visit chesterfield.gov for more information.
