After winning the NCAA Basketball Championship, the Virginia Cavaliers’ three best players have decided to move on. After Ty Jerome and De’Andre Hunter declared for the NBA draft on Monday, teammate Kyle Guy joined them on Tuesday.
Guy, a junior, announced his intention to declare and sign with an agent via tweet, but remained open to the possibility that he’d return to UVA next season.
Guy will be best remembered for his last-second free throws in the Cavaliers shocking victory over Auburn in the Final Four, but he also scored 24 points in the championship game en route to earning the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player Award.
The Indiana native led the Cavaliers in scoring this season, averaging 15.4 points per game.
April 21 is the deadline for college players to declare for the NBA draft and Guy will have until May 29 to withdraw and retain his college eligibility.
It seems unlikely that Jerome or Hunter will withdraw, but fans in Charlottesville will certainly be hoping that Guy reconsiders, as the team will be left with a huge void should it lose all three stars.
Still, the Cavaliers won a national championship, and that is likely a trade-off that every fan will happily take.
