In the weeks since the Mueller Report was released, both the public at large and elected officials have largely been split along partisan lines.
Virginia is no different. U.S. Rep Morgan Griffith (R-9) has been outspoken in his assessment that the Mueller Report cleared the President and the issue is resolved.
Griffith admitted to the Virginia Mercury that he wasn’t a fan of Trump’s use of foul language during some of his responses to the Mueller Report, but said he wasn’t bothered by any of the revelations included in the Special Counsel’s report.
Griffith’s fellow Virginia colleague, Rep. Denver Riggleman (R-5), meanwhile, believes the report was a waste of time and money, though he more recently said he thinks his colleagues should focus on the report’s revelations round Russia’s attempts to attack the United States’ infrastructure.
But for Griffith, Riggleman, and other Virginia Republicans, the idea of impeachment, or even further investigation into President Trump’s potential misconduct is something they seem to have no interest in.
Some Virginia Democrats, however, are calling for more investigations. Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-11) acknowledged that the report raised questions about the President’s conduct while Rep. Bobby Scott (D-3) called for more investigations and dismissed claims from the president that the report cleared Trump of wrongdoing.
Scott did add that any impeachment proceedings would have to be bipartisan, but said he wanted more hearings on the contents of the report before he made any decision regarding impeachment.
Regardless of what happens, it seems increasingly clear that Republicans are likely to stand by Trump, or at worst, ignore his misconduct, while Democrats try to perform oversight and uncover more evidence of Trump’s potential obstruction of justice.
