But first, a typo …

The long-awaited Virginia Women’s monument was unveiled at the Richmond Capitol Monday. The dedication ceremony almost went without a hitch, until onlookers spotted a familiar Virginia typo. Where dozens of localities’ names are inscribed atop the bronze sundial that sits atop a granite pedestal, Loudoun is spelled “Loudon,” missing the silent, second “u.” We searched our own site to see if we had ever made the same mistake. We have. So has The Washington Post, The Richmond Times-Dispatch, and even the county’s local paper, the Loudoun Times-Mirror.

Five things you need to know today …

  1. DNA testing clears 13 wrongfully convicted Virginians: Thirteen people wrongly convicted of serious crimes have been cleared after “more than a half-million old crime lab files were searched, thousands of hours were spent tracking down nearly 1,000 people, and hundreds of DNA tests were conducted.” All of the exonerated men were convicted of sex offenses, and some of murder, too, and 11 of the cases were due to mistaken witness identification. Virginia’s post-conviction DNA testing program began in the early 2000s after it was discovered that some of the forensic science department’s 530,000 old case files in investigations were conducted before DNA testing was widely available. Volunteer lawyers, law firms, nonprofit organizations and various state agencies and local governments all chipped in to assist in the massive undertaking, which is nearly finished. -Richmond Times-Dispatch

  2. Two Virginia cities make top 10 list for America’s worst drivers: It’s not in your head — Virginia drivers are bad. Based on accidents, speeding tickets, DUIs, and citations, Virginia Beach and Richmond drivers and the third and tenth worst in the country, respectively, according to an analysis by Quote Wizard. -WSET

  3. Only one Virginia city makes top 100 list for America’s most miserable place to live: Despite our drivers, a Business Insider analysis that ranked 1,000 cities across the country found Virginia is a pretty nice place to live. Only one Virginia city, Danville, made the top 100 most miserable places. New Jersey cities, by comparison, occupied nine of the top 100 spots. Seventeen Virginia cities made the total list of 1,000. The researchers considered median household income and commute times as well as the percentages of people working, living in poverty, and without health insurance to generate the ranking. -Richmond Times-Dispatch

  4. Amazon HQ2 not yet green enough for Arlington County officials: Amazon is being sent back to the drawing board to redesign its proposed headquarters in Arlington in a greener fashion. Amazon Vice President of Global Real Estate John Schoettler announced Monday that the company will now seek a LEED Platinum energy certification instead of its lower, original Gold goal, but Site Planning Review Committee officials want more details on how the company will meet its the carbon emissions reduction targets. -ARLnow

  5. Northam announces $1.16M investment in Virginia Beach: A logistics company will invest $1.16 million to relocate a substantial portion of its warehouse operations from Philadelphia, Utah, and Oklahoma to Virginia Beach, Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam announced today. “SRP Companies’ decision to move its operations to Virginia is a significant win for the distribution industry in Hampton Roads and the entire Commonwealth,” Northam said. -WSET
