“We need to make sure that we continue to promote those Americans that care about everyday people.”
On Sunday, the Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates Don Scott was in Dumfries stumping for congressional candidate Eugene Vindman.
“This race is so important,” Scott said from the rally stage. “We’re going to need every single one of you all to knock doors.”
The Dogwood caught up with Scott after the rally for a quick interview that has been edited for length and clarity.
The Dogwood: What are your biggest goals for the upcoming General Assembly session?
Del. Don Scott: Make sure we do everything that we can to continue to work together across the aisle to get things done for everyday hardworking Virginians. Not trying to do too much. We just want to make sure that we continue to keep this ship moving steadily. Virginia’s in a good place. We got a good business climate. We got a good climate for workers. We just need to make sure that we do everything to protect our most vulnerable Virginians and continue promoting economic opportunity for everybody.
What’s your closing message to voters as we approach Election Day?
Scott: I think the closing message is: vote for the party and the folks that have Virginia’s values.
Virginia has a huge percentage of veterans. I’m a veteran myself, and we don’t accept the premise that America is the garbage can for the world. We don’t accept the premise that veterans are suckers and losers if they raise their right hand and swore an oath to this country. We accept the premise that America is great, it’s exceptional, and we’re getting greater and better every single day.
It’s the greatest country on Earth with or without Trump as president. We need to make sure that we continue to promote those Americans that care about everyday people, that want to bring people together, that want to lift everybody up and not try to tear people apart.
What’s your reaction to the lawsuit over Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s voter purge?
Scott: The governor and (Attorney General) Jason Miyares took another L.
He has not prosecuted not one noncitizen for voting in the Commonwealth of Virginia. All they are doing is bowing down to MAGA and Donald Trump’s extremism to try to get a quick hit on Fox News, and it won’t work. Virginia sees right through it. These are people who are citizens who were eligible to vote – many of them – and he had no right to do it. He broke the federal law, and he was held to account.
Support Our Cause
Thank you for taking the time to read our work. Before you go, we hope you'll consider supporting our values-driven journalism, especially during an election year where so much is at stake for Virginians and our future.
Since day one, our goal here at Dogwood has always been to empower people across the commonwealth with fact-based news and information. We believe that when people are armed with knowledge about what's happening in their local, state, and federal governments—including who is working on their behalf and who is actively trying to block efforts aimed at improving the daily lives of Virginia families—they will be inspired to become civically engaged.
