Virginia’s summer berry trail: U-Pick farms worth the drive

Spanning the entire commonwealth, Virginia’s u-pick berry farms are ripe for summery adventure. Peak picking season runs from mid-April through August, with many farms charging by the pound and offering scenic experiences ranging from wagon rides to riverfront fields.

Whether you’re craving sun-warmed strawberries, juicy blackberries, sweet-tart raspberries, or antioxidant-packed blueberries, these 15 farms across Virginia invite visitors to roll up their sleeves and fill their buckets straight from the field.

1. Wegmeyer Farms

Location: 38299 Hughesville Rd., Hamilton, VA 20158

The strawberry fields at Wegmeyer Farms open for picking in spring. Reservations, which cost $30 on weekdays and $35 on weekends and holidays, are required. The reservation includes the first bucket of strawberries along with an hour in the field.

The farm was established in 2002 with pumpkin patches and was expanded to include a u-pick strawberry field in 2009. The Wegmeyer family adheres to Good Agricultural Practices.

2. Henley Farms

Location: 3513 Charity Neck Rd., Virginia Beach, VA 23456

Stop by Henley Farms for u-pick strawberry and blackberry options. The strawberries are $4.19 per pound. Pickers are required to bring their own containers.

The farm has been operated by three generations of the same family for over 40 years.

3. Flanagan Farm

Location: 1707 Princess Anne Rd., Virginia Beach, VA 23456

Flanagan Farm offers two acres of u-pick strawberries from late April through early June. They’re grown through plasticulture, so they’re clean for harvest.

The farm has been operated by five generations of the Flanagan family over the years, with the fourth and fifth generations currently working it.

4. Cullipher Farm 

Location: 772 Princess Anne Rd., Virginia Beach, VA 23457

Cullipher Farm’s u-pick berries season runs from April through August, with strawberries being available from mid-April through mid-June, blueberries from late May through mid-July, and blackberries from July through mid-August.

Remarkably, the farm plants 90,000 strawberry plants annually. They represent two varieties, including Ruby June and Albion. The farm also maintains four acres of blueberry patches. The farm also added blackberries in 2024.

5. Chesterfield Berry Farm

Location: 26002 Pear Orchard Rd., Moseley, VA 23120

Chesterfield Berry Farm opens its strawberry fields for those who want to pick their own berries every spring from mid-April through May. They’re $5.99 per pound.

The family-owned and operated farm sits along the Appomattox River.

6. Braehead Farm

Location: 1130 Tyler St., Fredericksburg, VA 22401

Strawberries, blackberries, and raspberries can be picked at Braehead Farm. The fields are open for picking from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the season. Strawberries are available from April through May. Blueberries and raspberries are available from May through September, with blackberries also becoming available in July.

Braehead is the last remaining farm within the historic City of Fredericksburg.

7. 3 Birds Berry Farm

Location: 1876 Brooksfield Rd., Blacksburg, VA 24060

3 Birds Berry Farm opens its fields for those interested in picking pesticide-free and organic blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries. Blueberries, which constitute the majority of the farm’s six acres, are available all summer long. Blackberries are picked during July. Raspberries are available from late July through early September.

8. Mount Pleasant Farms

Location: 2201 Mount Pleasant Rd., Chesapeake, VA 23322

Mount Pleasant Farms has u-pick strawberry and blackberry options. Strawberries are available for picking in the spring, while blackberries are available in the summer. Mount Pleasant encourages those interested in visiting the fields to check its social media pages to verify availability. Be sure to also pick up a freshly baked strawberry pie.

Mount Pleasant was founded in 1992 as a family-owned farm specializing in cattle, corn, soybeans, wheat, and oats, but later expanded to include u-pick options.

9. Miller Farms Market

Location: 12101 Orange Plank Rd., Locust Grove, VA 22508

Miller Farms Market offers u-pick strawberry, blackberry, and blueberry options. The strawberry season normally starts first, followed by blackberries and blueberries. The strawberries, which can be picked from four patches, are $4.99 per pound.

The market is family-owned and operated.

10. Agriberry Farm and CSA

Location: 6289 River Rd., Hanover, VA 23069

Agriberry Farm and CSA opens to the public on occasion for blackberry and raspberry picking. The u-pick berry days are advertised on the farm’s Eventbrite page. The fields are located about a quarter-mile from the barn.

If you like the taste of the berries, consider also picking up a jar of the hand-crafted fruit jams, like the signature Agriblend & Seedless Agriblend Jams.

11. Swift Creek Berry Farm & Greenhouse

Location: 17210 Genito Rd., Moseley, VA 23120

Swift Creen Berry Farm & Greenhouse’s blueberry season starts in late June and runs through early July. The farm’s berries are Certified Naturally Grown, so they’re clean enough to eat right out of the field. If you don’t want to go home and start baking after spending the afternoon in the field, you can pick up a homemade blueberry pie on site.

The family-owned and operated farm has been up and running since the 1980s when the first blueberries were planted. The farm is still run by the same couple, Clyde and Kathryn, and their grown children.

12. Mackintosh Fruit Farm

Location: 1608 Russell Rd., Berryville, VA 22611

Mackintosh Fruit Farm is open from May through October, with its strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, and blueberry fields open for those who want to pick their own berries.

The farm has been family-owned and operated since the late 1980s.

13. Mt. Olympus Berry Farm

Location: 23298 US Route 1 Ruther Glen, VA 22546

It’s much easier to pick your own strawberries at Mt. Olympus Berry Farm because they’re grown on raised beds. The growing season runs from early May through early June. Blueberries are also available for picking, with the season lasting from the end of June through July.

A core tenet of the farm is to be a good steward of the land by using organic and sustainable agricultural practices.

14. Great Country Farms

Location: 18780 Foggy Bottom Rd., Bluemont, VA 20135

Great Country Farms offers u-pick strawberries. To access the strawberry fields, pickers catch a ride on a wagon, which runs from the morning to late afternoon during the season. Containers are provided.

The 400-acre farm has been farmed continuously by the Zurschmeide family since the 1970s.

15. Seamans’ Orchard

Location: 415 Dark Hollow Rd., Roseland, VA 22967

Since 2003, Seaman’s Orchard has been growing strawberries. The pick-your-own strawberry season normally opens in May. Visitors can either use the containers provided or bring their own. In 2010, the orchard added a blueberry patch, which normally opens in June.

Tracing its roots back to 1933, the orchard is a family-owned and operated business.
