It’s no secret that college tuition has skyrocketed in recent years. In Virginia, the average public college tuition rose nearly 80%, with some schools seeing their rates double.
Christopher Newport University is among those schools, where tuition jumped from $7,550 in 2008-09 to $14,754 this year.
But there’s finally some good news. CNU is freezing tuition for the 2019-2020 school year, meaning there will be no increase to students and their families. The school is just the latest in a string of Virginia schools that have decided to freeze tuition costs for the 2019-2020 school year.
This comes after the General Assembly set aside $57.5 million for public colleges that agreed to freeze tuition rates. Schools will also receive $15.5 million in additional financial aid for struggling students.
While this is sure to be well received by students and parents alike, it remains to be seen if it’s a viable long-term solution to the rising cost of higher education and the resulting student loan crisis.
