Rep. James Walkinshaw pressed the U.S. Postal Service over its implementation of President Donald Trump’s restrictions on mail voting, asking why the agency moved forward with rules that courts have repeatedly blocked. Trump’s order directed USPS to require states to hand over lists of mail-ballot voters and use federally approved barcodes on ballot envelopes, with noncompliant ballots being rejected. A federal judge found that Congress had not given the executive branch or USPS that authority and said the requirements were unconstitutional and unlawful. A whistleblower separately alleged that USPS was continuing work on procedures that could cause otherwise legal ballots to be rejected. The latest federal ruling again blocks major parts of the rule, although the Trump administration is appealing that decision.
