Virginia Hospitals Rank First in Patient Safety

Fifty-Six Percent of Hospitals Got an “A” Rating

Virginia’s hospitals topped the Leapfrog Group Hospital Safety Grade state rankings for Fall 2021, with 56% of hospitals receiving an “A” ranking for patient safety. Neighboring North Carolina came in second, with 55%. In a stark contrast, West Virginia ranked close to last with 4.6% of its hospitals getting an “A” ranking in patient safety. Only three states received 0%: Washington, DC, Delaware, and North Dakota.

What do these rankings mean, and how do they impact families and individuals across the commonwealth? When someone goes to the hospital, there’s typically some type of ailment they’re hoping to fix—and those procedures often go best without additional complications at no fault of the patient. The Leapfrog Group found that upwards of 250,000 people die every year from preventable errors in hospitals. Their rankings take into account how hospitals and other health care organizations protect their patients from errors, injuries, accidents, and infections.

Out of the 73 hospitals monitored by Leapfrog Group, 41 received an “A” grade, followed by 18 who received “B” grades, 13 hospitals received “C” grades, while only one hospital, Fauquier Hospital in Warrenton, received a “D” grade.

Overall, the Old Dominion State climbed three spots over the past few months, coming in fourth out of 51 states in Leapfrog’s Spring 2021 ranking with a solid 50%.
