Alexandria celebrates 276 years: Discover the best things to do in Old Town this summer

Old Town in Alexandria is steeped with historic landmarks—and full of shopping, dining, and endless opportunities for summer fun. 

Alexandria will celebrate its 276th birthday on Saturday, July 12, at Oronoco Bay Park. As the festivities abound, we’re taking a look at an area of the city called “Old Town.”

With plenty to do just steps from the Potomac River, Old Town Alexandria offers unique charm, steeped in history.

Pop’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream

When the founder of Pop’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream, Ray “Pop” Giovanni, opened his doors in the 1940s ,he primarily did catering for the White House. Fun fact: The shop’s location is just right outside of Washington DC! First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt had many favorite flavors of their ice cream. Giovanni passed away in 1998, but they are still living up to the same legacy that he created with his original recipes.
