City council has already unanimously voted to remove the statue.
Three counter-protesters were arrested after a “tense group exchange” with a Tea Party group that gathered to mourn a Confederate statue in Portsmouth on Sunday.
The rally, organized by the Portsmouth Tea Party, aimed to show support for keeping the city’s Confederate monument, and called for people to come out and “take back the city.” The Virginian Pilot reported dozens of people from activist groups arrived in opposition to the group.
According to police reports, three counter-protesters were arrested and released, receiving summons for disorderly conduct. There are no reports stating what led to the arrests.
Most recently, the Portsmouth City Council unanimously voted to relocate the city’s Confederate statue. While the council has not confirmed the new location, they’re looking to put the statue in a storage area.
