The Virginia Department of Elections gets cybersecurity assistance from the US Department of Homeland Security and the Virginia Information Technologies Agency to identify any issues or threats to the electoral process.
The state Department of Elections has also made investments using funds from a Help America Vote Act grant to help bolster Virginia’s election infrastructure. The money has been used for things like adding more cybersecurity training, increasing security for elections data, and establishing stronger certification standards for voting equipment.
State law requires that the state Department of Elections oversee annual audits of electoral results. Local election officials review a sample of paper ballots to make sure voting machines reported the results accurately.
