By standing up for Virginia, Gov. Abigail Spanberger recently took her seat as the commonwealth’s first woman leader to ever hold the office. Do she and I agree on every policy? No, not all of them. But with her proven track record of working with everyone to achieve the best outcome for the folks she represents? I’ll back that play every time. 

Over the course of her political career, I’ve seen a woman who leads with empathy, patience, and perspective. And if that’s the tone she sets for Virginia, I think we’re in very good hands.

Michael O’Connor, who writes Virginia Capital and reports for Dogwood on politics and economics, traveled to Richmond for Spanberger’s inauguration event. While there, he caught up with individuals excited about the change in Virginia and filmed an uplifting overview of the governor’s speech on unity. Today, we’re sharing the vibes from that day, and I’m so glad you’re here. 

First things first: On Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026, Abigail Spanberger swore an oath to support the US and Virginia Constitutions, and to faithfully and impartially execute all duties of the office to the best of her ability, as outlined in Virginia Code § 49-1.

Spanberger officially became the 75th governor of Virginia—and the very first woman to serve in that role. The governor’s position in the commonwealth (after independence from England) dates back to 1776, when Hanover County-born patriot Patrick Henry took office.

Dogwood’s Michael O’Connor shared his opinion after listening to Gov. Spanberger’s inaugural address.

Some key talking points included:

• A call for unity
• Addressing affordability
• Defending civil and immigrant rights
• Improving public education

Dogwood caught up with US House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries in Richmond for Gov. Spanberger’s inauguration. The representative from New York said it was a big day for Virginia, the country, and, of course, for the newly elected governor.

Jeffries also shared his thoughts on the new redistricting amendment heading to Virginia voters this fall.
