It’s Vacation Bible School season down here in the Southside. Typically speaking, we have about 100 kids who attend VBS at our church, and we split them up into smaller groups to enjoy the various activity stations.
In my group this year, I have a high schooler as a co-crew leader. She’s super kind, very funny, and has a great way with the kids. In fact, after seeing her work with the children, I told her she’d be a natural talent if she considered education as a career path.
Speaking of career paths, to qualify for many careers today, folks often decide to go to college. The commonwealth has no lack of amazing schools, but what about the aesthetics? In today’s lead story, we’re ranking Virginia colleges based on their campuses. Enjoy, and remember, I’m so glad you’re here.

The University of Virginia is in Charlottesville. (University of Virginia)

Here’s what you need to know: Not all Virginia college campuses are created equal. While the commonwealth is known for having an exceptional number of quality higher education institutions, not all of them are known for having beautiful campuses.
Our top picks:
-
Perhaps one of the most iconic college campuses in the commonwealth is the University of Virginia, which was designed and established by Thomas Jefferson in 1819. Spread across 1,682 acres, the campus takes up a good portion of Charlottesville. The Rotunda, a circa-1826 Palladian-style dome structure, and the surrounding area known as The Lawn are the two most well-known features of the campus.
- Unlike other Virginia colleges, Coastal Virginia’s Old Dominion University has a waterfront campus. For example, the Lafayette River runs alongside the campus. Whitehurst Beach, which features a pier, is the best place to enjoy the waterfront.
-
Situated in the Shenandoah Valley with the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains in sight, James Madison University’s 721-acre campus offers a range of notable campus attractions. The Edith J. Carrier Arboretum, a woodland sanctuary that serves as both an urban garden and forested green space, adds to the beauty of the campus.

A trivia card collection based on the Andy Griffith Show. (Amie Knowles/Dogwood)
|
By Amie Knowles
A couple of weeks ago, I took my 8-year-old, Colton, to the Hillsville Flea Market. While he was on the hunt for Pokémon cards, I stumbled upon a card set that caught my interest—one based on the Andy Griffith Show.
The television show ran from 1960 to 1968, but you couldn’t have convinced my dad that the series ever ended. At 5:30 p.m. every weeknight, Sheriff Andy Taylor, his son Opie, Deputy Barney Fife, Aunt Bee, and other lovable characters from the fictional town of Mayberry filled our television screen with their latest antics.
Our household, of course, went one step further—my dad had every single episode on DVD, so we could watch them any time we wanted. We also only lived a hop and a skip from Mount Airy, North Carolina, where Andy Griffith grew up, and where he got the inspiration for “Mayberry.”
The 1990 card set I found at Hillsville was only $10, and each one has a picture from the show on the front and a fun fact on the back. I’ve enjoyed flipping through them. Who knew nostalgia would be so cheap?
