When I talk to voters upset by the rise and return of President Donald Trump to the White House, it’s not unusual for them to struggle to articulate their top issue.
There’s just too much to be mad about.
But one of the most basic ways Trump has made life harder for Americans is by pursuing policies that make life more expensive. This is all the more galling after Trump campaigned relentlessly on the promise that he would lower the cost of living.
There are two clear examples of this: the war in Iran and tariffs. My story today is focused on tariffs.
Economists at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York recently found that for every percentage point increase in average tariffs, consumer goods prices increase by about a quarter of a percent after one year.
Meanwhile, the average tariff rate on all imports is 9.6%, up from 2.1% from when Trump was inaugurated in 2025, according to estimates from The Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center.
So where does the Republican in one of the Congressional races that will determine which party controls the US House of Representatives stand on all this?
As I report in my story today, Wittman, who represents Virginia’s 1st Congressional District, has voted in support of Trump’s tariffs.
We’ll soon find out if Wittman’s support for tariffs translates into voters supporting him.
