Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr. apologized Monday for advertising face masks with a racist photo on Twitter. The tweet has since been deleted.
The photo came from Gov. Ralph Northam’s medical school yearbook page in the 1980s, and pictured a student in a KKK costume and a student in blackface.
“After listening to African American LU leaders and alumni over the past week and hearing their concerns, I understand that by tweeting an image to remind all of the governor’s racist past I actually refreshed the trauma that image had caused and offended some by using the image to make a political point,” he said on Twitter.
Falwell’s apology comes after staff and alumni at Liberty University denounced him in the past week. Last week we talked to Prof. Chris House, who resigned his position at Liberty University immediately after seeing Falwell’s tweet.
