Individuals impacted by Hurricane Helene need help; here’s how you can assist.

“Look for the helpers.”

It’s a line synonymous with Fred Rogers, the late children’s television host of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood; yet it actually came as advice from his mother. She encouraged Rogers—after he saw scary things in the news as a boy—to “look for the helpers; you will always find people who are helping.”

In true neighborly fashion, there are incredible efforts by Virginians who are giving of their time, talents, and goods to help those impacted by Hurricane Helene.

This is in no way a comprehensive list; in fact, it’s just a number of places our team can quickly vouch for, where we know that the money or items collected will go where they’re promised. We’d love to add to it, preferably with donation locations throughout Virginia.

Southside donation locations:

  • ShearGypsy—Emily Thompson, owner of ShearGypsy salon in Danville, will host a Haircut and Hair Tinsel event for men, women, and children on Saturday, Oct. 12. With a suggested minimum donation of $25 per service, all profits raised will head to a charity helping with efforts related to the hurricane.
  • God’s Pit Crew—This crisis response team based out of Danville recently delivered a tractor trailer load of critical relief supplies to aid hurricane victims in East Tennessee. Additional relief efforts are in the works as roads continue to reopen across Western North Carolina. The nonprofit is collecting donations for Blessing Buckets, which are filled with critical supplies, for $35.
  • South Boston Speedway—If Danville’s a bit of a drive, the South Boston Speedway is collecting cases of bottled water to donate to God’s Pit Crew. Drop off is available at the Charles Anderson Lawn Care Service Inc. trailer from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday, Oct. 4. It’s located on the Turn 4 side of the ticket booth.
  • Dan River Church—Nonperishable food items, hygiene items, paper products, and baby items are just some of the things this Danville church congregation strives to collect this week. A trailer will head to help those impacted by the storm this weekend. To schedule a donation, please email madison.sharber@danriverchurch.org.
  • Danville Lifesaving Crew—From sports drinks to pet food, sunscreen, and heavy duty work gloves, there are over a dozen items the Danville Lifesaving Crew hopes to send to those impacted by the hurricane. The drop off location is at the Danville Area Training Center, located at 630 Randolph St, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.
