Home to the University of Virginia, it’s no surprise that Charlottesville scored among the best cities nationwide for college basketball fans.

A WalletHub study analyzed nearly 300 cities spanning the country, taking factors like the number of teams per city, the teams’ winning percentage, and the fans’ social-media engagement into account.

The city of Charlottesville scored the 25th spot, ranking as one of the best places for US college basketball fans.

While the home of the Hoos ranked the highest in the state, several other Virginia cities made the list. They included: Farmville (62), Norfolk (80), Lynchburg (87), Radford (112), Lexington (115), Harrisonburg (135), Blacksburg (173), Richmond (181), Williamsburg (182), Hampton (255), and Fairfax (282).

The WalletHub findings focused on the NCAA fanbase—and for the next few months, you’ll see Dogwood highlighting some really incredible ladies through social media posts, who play for the NCAA women’s basketball teams.

Through March Madness, we’ll shine a special spotlight on a college student playing for one of the Virginia teams. Since Charlottesville ranked so high on the list, it only seemed appropriate to start with a team member from the University of Virginia (UVA).

Take sophomore guard Kymora Johnson for example. She’s had an impressive season already—and the basketball player hails from Charlottesville.

Prior to college, Johnson attended St. Anne’s-Belfield, a private boarding day school in Charlottesville.

Her various accolades include but are not limited to:

  • McDonald’s High School All-American
  • Two-time Gatorade State Player of the Year (2022-23)
  • Two-time Max Preps Virginia Player of the Year (2022-23)
