What if a good night’s sleep was just a few clicks away? This new program might be the answer.
Do you have trouble sleeping? A UVA-developed digital program is helping older adults finally get the rest they need—no doctor visits required.
First things first—don’t sleep on insomnia risks:
- Up to 30% of older adults struggle with insomnia.
- Poor sleep increases risks for depression, falls, and other health issues.
- Cognitive behavioral therapy can help with insomnia, but it’s sometimes difficult to access.
SHUTi OASIS is an online insomnia program made for adults 55+. In a 300+ person trial, the UVA-developed program significantly outperformed standard online patient education.
“Not only did we find that this works, but we found that older adults were able to do this with very little, if any, additional help,” said UVA’s Lee Ritterband, PhD, the creator of SHUTi and the director of UVA Health’s Center for Behavioral Health & Technology.
Results indicated important benefits for older adults, offering “strong potential to expand access to insomnia treatment for this underserved population.”
The Virginia researchers recently published their findings in the scientific journal, “npj Digital Medicine.” The article is free to access and read.
