Looking For Something to Do On MLK Day? Check Out These 6 Service Opportunities in Virginia

Fun fact: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is the only federal holiday that’s been designated as a National Day of Service. 

Are you looking for an opportunity to serve your community on this year’s National Day of Service? The holiday is a great way to get out in your community and take an active role as a citizen. Here are some region-specific ways to get out there and get involved, because it’s “A Day On, Not a Day Off!”

Arlington

Volunteers can meet up at Washington-Liberty High School at 8:30 a.m., ahead of the opening program. The first 500 volunteers will receive a T-shirt. There are projects to volunteer for on-site, as well as many that are off-site, including a virtual opportunity.

Richmond

HandsON Greater Richmond has a list of various events to volunteer at, that aren’t just limited to Richmond! There are also several opportunities available in Petersburg and Chesterfield.

Fairfax

Volunteer Fairfax has an assortment of events on their website, including events geared specifically for teenagers, as well as an event called the Valentine’s Challenge for adults, where volunteers will be handcrafting Valentine’s Day cards for the elderly community.

Charlottesville

The Nature Conservancy has listed a lot of events to help clean up the environment for MLK Day, with various events happening Jan. 14 through Jan. 21.

Roanoke

Roanoke College will be hosting several events around the campus to serve the community and the environment. There are two shift times: 12-2 p.m. or 2-4 p.m.

Virginia Western Community College will also be hosting a Day of Service on Fri. Jan. 13.

Norfolk

From helping to paint the Slover Library’s new Community Personal Care Pantry, to helping out at IKEA with Moms for a Mission, and even a community cleanup at Barraud Park, there are multiple ways to volunteer in Norfolk.
