National Pi Day on March 14 gave math nerds the opportunity to celebrate their passion for the mathematical constant pi (3.14), while also consuming delicious slices of sweet or savory baked pies.
We think every day should be a reason to eat the delicious treat, so we’ve assembled a list of 11 stops to visit in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia. You can enjoy a slice or two, then take a whole pie home for later.
Norfolk
Tessa’s Creations
Address: 738 West 22nd St. Ste. 5
Tessa’s Creations is your one-stop shop for your custom baking needs. It’s operated by Tessa, a self-taught baker who has more than 30 years of experience. She specializes in alternate diets, like gluten-free and vegan. Tessa’s pie options include apple, cherry, peach, pecan, pumpkin, coconut cream, chocolate, key lime and peanut butter mousse.
Pollard’s Chicken
Address: 3033 Ballentine Blvd.
Although Pollard’s Chicken is best known for its home-style savory food, including its chicken, it also sells homemade pies. The 50-year-old business offers sweet potato pie, deep-dish apple pie, and coconut custard pie. They can either be ordered as a slice or as a whole pie.
May’s Parlor
Address: 340 W 22nd St.
May’s Parlor, a coastal cottage bakery-café, offers artisan pastries, cakes, cookies, and pies, of course. Spiced pumpkin, chocolate bourbon pecan, and caramel apple are some of the pie flavors it offers. The parlor is owned by Racheal Browning, who also serves as the head baker. She studied at the acclaimed Culinary Institute of America in New York City, before returning home to open the parlor.

Virginia Beach
Staz-a-Licious Bakery & Cafe
Address: 1628 Independence Blvd.
Staz-a-Licious Bakery & Café serves cakes, pastries, and, most importantly, pies. Pie flavors offered include apple, cherry, blueberry, very berry, peach, strawberry rhubarb, lemon meringue, pumpkin, pecan, derby, key lime, chocolate peanut butter, chocolate mousse, and s’mores.
Flour Child Bakery
Address: 1716 Pleasure House Rd. Ste. 104
Flour Child Bakery is an old-fashioned neighborhood bakery that has been selling pies since 2010. “At Flour Child Bakery, baking is our passion,” the bakery said. “All of our sweet treats are made from scratch right here in our cozy kitchen.”
You can find some pies here that might be difficult to source at other places: Flavors include possum pie, Dutch raspberry sour cream, cherry crisp, blueberry crumb, strawberry-rhubarb crisp, lemon chess, salted chocolate chess, and Kentucky Derby.
Sugar Plum Bakery
Address: 1353 Laskin Rd.
Sugar Plum Bakery describes its pies as being “unparalleled thanks to our tender, buttery pie shell and exceptional ingredients.” Its pie selection includes both classics and seasonal specialties. The classic pie flavors include apple, blueberry, cherry, chocolate mousse, coconut cream, cream, Dutch apple, French apple, fruit, key lime, lemon meringue, nuts about chocolate, pecan, praline pecan pumpkin, pumpkin, and sugar plum berry. Seasonal offerings from Memorial Day through Labor Day include strawberry rhubarb, peach, and blackberry. The sugar plum berry pie is an obvious choice.
The bakery describes it as “a pie that is baked to perfection with blueberries, cranberries, and cherries. A wonderful blend of sweet and tart. So extraordinary we had to give it our name!” You can decide if you want a lattice, crumb, or whole crust. Unlike most bakeries, Sugar Plum has a unique mission of providing persons with disabilities with employment, education, and training.
Heritage Amish Bake Shoppe
Address: 3600 Dam Neck Rd.
Heritage Amish Bake Shoppe serves an assortment of baked goods, including pies. At various times of the year, it serves blueberry, lemon meringue, strawberry, apple, cherry, pecan, and pumpkin pies.
Gimme the Sweets
Address: 3590 Holland Rd. #105
Gimme the Sweets sells “delicious desserts and treats for every occasion.” Its pie offerings include whole sweet potato and sweet potato cheesecake pies.
Hampton
Sinful Treats Bakery
Address: 1301 North King St.
Sinful Treats Bakery describes itself as “your go-to local bakery for custom order cakes, cupcakes, cake pops, whoopie pies, cookie bars, desserts, wedding cakes and creative sweets.” Key lime and peanut butter are the available pie flavors.
Portsmouth
Lovin’ Oven Bakery

“Taste comes first” at Lovin’ Oven Bakery. It uses local suppliers to source the freshest and most authentic ingredients. Old-fashioned techniques are used to ensure quality. Regular whole pies come in French apple, French silk chocolate, lemon meringue, key lime, and sour orange. Whoopie pies can be purchased as a half or whole dozen.
Chesapeake
Bergey’s Breadbasket

Bergey’s Breadbasket has been family owned and operated for over 75 years. Baked goods are made from scratch daily. “Each pie crust is hand-rolled, making our pies truly something special,” the establishment said. Coconut custard, pecan shoo-fly, chocolate pecan, brownie walnut, and chocolate chip cookie pie are the flavors available year-round. Seasonal pie flavors include strawberry, blackberry, blueberry, peach, apple, pumpkin, key lime, chocolate cream, peanut butter cream, coconut cream, and banana cream.
