Here’s a Richmond locals’ guide to enriching, affordable after-school programs for your kids in Virginia’s state capital.
With school back in session, many area kids need activities to avoid the after-school slump. After-care and daycare programs can be expensive, but thankfully, affordable low-cost programs are available throughout Virginia—and they can teach your child important life skills. Here’s a Richmond locals’ guide to enriching, affordable after-school programs for your kids in our state’s capital.
Boys and Girls Club of Metro Richmond
The Boys and Girls Club has served Richmond since 1953 and provides both after-school and summer activities for children K-12. Children in this program are paired with mentors who help guide and teach them about the importance of academic success, good character, and more. Registration fees to join depend on the chapter, but The Boys and Girls Club is dedicated to keeping prices low, making their organization an affordable choice for after-school activities for your child.
YMCA of Greater Richmond
The Richmond YMCA provides numerous after-school programs to keep kids active and maintain their physical health. In addition to different physical activities, this program also provides snacks and homework assistance. Due to limited funding this year, the program is no longer free but has a small registration fee.
The City of Richmond’s Out of School Time Program
The City of Richmond’s Out of School Time Program is an affordable after-school program that runs until 6 p.m. every school day. The program includes a one-time registration fee of $140 and works to culturally enrich students through activities including arts and crafts, dance, music, sports, and more. As an added benefit, snacks and meals are provided daily.
Visual Arts Center of Richmond Art After School Classes
Does your child have a passion for art? Help them flourish artistically with one of Richmond Visual Arts Center’s numerous after-school classes. Children ages six-14 can choose from numerous art classes including darkroom work, modeling, clay sculpting, animation, and more. Each class has a fee for registration ranging from $100- $200, and each class spans months. Want discounted fees? Become a member of the Arts Center and get a discount on every after-school class.
Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts
The Boy and Girl Scouts of America are known for teaching children leadership, outdoor survival, and social skills, as well as instilling in kids the drive to serve their community. Whatever your child’s interests are, scouts gain useful skills that prepare them for adulthood. Fees vary based on chapter, but these organizations are dedicated to anyone wanting to join.
Richmond Youth Sports Leagues
Richmond Youth Sports League has many different club sports programs. Children three years and up can enjoy sports including soccer, football, and lacrosse at Richmond Youth Sports League. These programs are akin to club sports, where no tryouts are necessary and anyone can join regardless of skill level. If your kids want the fun of sports without all of the pressure, sports leagues are the best choice for them. Fees vary by sport, so be sure to check online for team requirements.
