Dems throw more weight behind competitive Virginia House races

Virginia Democrats are looking to build on their majority in the House of Delegates this fall.

A national Democratic political group is continuing to throw its organizational weight behind competitive Virginia statehouse elections this fall. 

The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) announced Thursday it’s backing  four additional Democratic candidates in competitive House of Delegates races in Virginia:  Kimberly Pope Adams; Elizabeth Guzman; Jessica Anderson; and Lily Franklin. 

This brings the total number of House Races the DLCC is getting involved in to eight. The other Democratic candidates the group is supporting are: Del. Josh Thomas; Del. Joshua Cole; Del. Nadarius Clark; and Del. Michael Feggans.  

All 100 seats in Virginia’s House of Delegates are up for election this fall. Democrats hold a 51-49 majority in the General Assembly’s lower chamber. State and national Democrats want to expand that majority to help bolster reproductive rights, voting rights, and more. 

The DLCC announced in December that it was spending $100,000 in Virginia to help the state’s Democratic House and Senate caucuses in January’s special elections and the upcoming November elections. More recently, the DLCC has said it’s committed an ongoing seven-figure investment to Virginia for this year’s elections.  

Adams is once again challenging Republican Del. Kim Taylor to represent Virginia’s 82nd House of Delegates district in the Petersburg area. Adams lost a close race to Taylor in 2023 by 53 votes.

Guzman, a former state Delegate, is challenging Republican Del. Ian Lovejoy to represent the 22nd House District in part of Prince William County. Guzman represented the 31st House District from 2018 to 2024 as one of the first Hispanic women to serve in Virginia’s General Assembly.

Anderson is again challenging Republican Del. Amanda Batten to represent Virginia’s 71st House District in the Williamsburg area. Anderson lost to Batten in 2023 by two percentage points, which amounted to 667 votes.

Franklin is in a rematch with Republican Del. Chris Obenshain to represent Virginia’s Republican-leaning 41st House District in parts of Montgomery and Roanoke counties. Franklin lost a close race to Obenshain in 2023 by less than one percentage point, or 193 votes.
