UVA Health University Medical Center ranked No. 1 in Virginia and among the top 50 nationally in Newsweek’s “World’s Best Hospitals 2025.”
The University of Virginia (UVA) continues to cement its position as a leader in health care and education, with multiple faculty members and institutions receiving prestigious recognition in 2025. From top hospital rankings to groundbreaking research acknowledgments, these achievements highlight UVA’s commitment to excellence across various disciplines.
UVA Health named Virginia’s top hospital by Newsweek
In a significant achievement for Virginia’s health care sector, UVA Health University Medical Center has secured the top spot among Virginia hospitals and ranks 49th nationally in Newsweek’s “World’s Best Hospitals 2025” guide. The prestigious ranking considers input from medical experts across 30 countries, patient satisfaction data, and quality metrics.
“Every day, our team embraces our mission of transforming health and inspiring hope for all Virginians and beyond,” said Dr. Mitchell H. Rosner, UVA’s acting executive vice president for health affairs, reflecting on the achievement.
Engineering excellence recognized with multiple honors
The School of Engineering and Applied Science celebrated multiple achievements, with Dean Jennifer West receiving the 2025 Pierre Galletti Award from the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. West’s pioneering work in nanomedicine and cancer research has resulted in 20 patents and over 225 research publications.
Additionally, three faculty members—Scott T. Acton, Gustavo Kunde Rohde, and Shannon Barker—were inducted into the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering College of Fellows, representing the top 2% of medical and biological engineers nationwide.
Distinguished recognition for legal and educational excellence
A.E. Dick Howard, the longest-serving professor in UVA’s history, received the 2025 Outstanding Virginian Award from the Virginia General Assembly. The award acknowledges Howard’s contributions to constitutionalism and democracy throughout his career at the Law School.
In education research, Bob Pianta, former dean of the School of Education and Human Development, earned the American Educational Research Association’s Distinguished Contributions to Research in Education Award. The association recognized Pianta as “a major force in educational research as an internationally recognized pre-eminent scholar of early childhood education.”
