Learn how to check your voter registration status and register to vote with this simple list.
So you’re ready to vote in Virginia… or are you? Thankfully, it’s easy to find out if you’re registered to vote in the commonwealth—and it’s a quick click away if you discover you aren’t.
You can check your registration status with a brief visit to the Virginia Department of Elections website. The secure online form will request your first and last name, date of birth, last four digits of your social security number, and the county where you live in Virginia. It’ll also ask that you check a box stating that you’re requesting the information for yourself—not on behalf of someone else.
After you submit the form, you’ll be able to double check your voter registration. You’ll also be able to see important information like which districts you’re in, contact info for your local general registrar’s office, and where to cast your ballot.

How and where to register
- Online with ID: If you have a valid Virginia driver’s license or state ID, you can register online via the Virginia Department of Elections website.
- In-person: If you’d like to register in person, visit your local voter registration office and provide a valid form of photo ID from this list. You can find your local office using this tool. Voter registration forms may also be available at some public libraries, Virginia DMV offices, and government offices throughout the state. You can also download the registration form and return it in person.
- By mail: To register by mail, print the voter registration form from the Virginia Department of Elections and mail it to your local voter registrar by the deadline listed below. Find your local office here.
- Election Day registration: Virginia residents may register to vote on Election Day with a provisional ballot. To do so, visit your local polling place during open hours on Election Day and speak to a poll worker. Find your local polling place here.
When to register
Thanks to SB991, which was signed by the governor back in March, Virginia voters can now register 11 days before Election Day, shrinking the buffer from the previous deadline of at least 22 days before a given election.
- As long as you complete your voter registration by Oct. 24, you’ll be good to go for the Nov. 4 elections. You can also register and vote in person after Oct. 24 with a provisional ballot.
However, if you’re planning to cast a ballot in the 2025 election, there’s no better time than now to register. .
