Virginia Rep. Don Beyer went to the proposed site of President Trump’s 250-foot triumphal arch after constituents alerted his office to heavy equipment operating there. Workers told Beyer they were conducting archaeological and soil-related work, but did not answer when he asked whether it was preparation for the arch. The distinction matters: a federal judge has required the administration to provide advance notice before construction-related activity, while allowing archaeological information-gathering at the site. Beyer, who has introduced legislation that would block the arch, says the equipment raises questions about whether the administration is preparing to move the project forward.
