I asked a few weeks ago when the appropriate time to put the Christmas tree up might be. Now, I guess I should inquire about a good timeline for taking it down. Our lights typically stay shining until after Colton’s birthday (Jan. 8). Granted, a few times, we’ve kept it up until early March—and once, all year long.
Ours goes in a box until the following season. But if you selected a live tree this year, there are disposal options throughout the state that go beyond sending it to a landfill. Today, we’re exploring a creative venture in the Richmond area, doing just that. I’m so glad you’re here.
P.S. Yes, our prototype Christmas tree cage worked for the entire season—exactly zero cats breached the impenetrable fortress of arched windows, hinges, clear shower liners, and duct tape.

Here’s what you need to know: The Central Virginia Waste Management Authority (CVWMA) recently announced that several of its locations will be accepting and recycling Christmas trees for free, to use as mulch for landscaping. An ID is required to drop off your tree to prove that you’re a Richmond resident—the CVWMA has indicated it will only accept trees from people who live in its respective districts.
In Henrico County, free Christmas tree drop-off locations include:
Trees are accepted through Jan. 9, usually between 7:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. We’ve got more information at our link below.
