The other day, I saw a Facebook memory from a few years ago. Colton was 5, lamenting that he hadn’t been outside in quite some time. Well, of course he hadn’t—it was the dead of winter, and we’re not cold-natured people.
I checked the weather. It was 42 degrees. But our local coffee shop was still open, and we had coats, hats, and gloves. I bundled us up to take a brisk, chilly walk to get fresh donuts and warm drinks. That night, he told me that little walk was his favorite part of the day. It was mine, too.
Do short coffee walks cure depression? Probably not. But from personal experience, I can say they don’t hurt. Even when it’s cold outside. So bundle up, take a few steps, and remember, I’m so glad you’re here.

Dear Grace,
I get depressed during the winter months. How can I motivate myself to stay more positive and upbeat?
— Nervous That It Will Get Bad Soon in Two Rivers
Dear Nervous,
For some folks, the shorter days and colder weather are a welcome opportunity to cook soup, cuddle up with a good book, or break out a new knitting project. But for some folks, winter can bring holiday grief, or even Seasonal Affective Disorder (or S.A.D.).
I’m not a doctor, but if you get depression during the winter months, you should talk to a mental health professional about Seasonal Affective Disorder. When there’s less daylight, our body chemistry changes too. If you’re struggling with something more serious than the winter blues, you’re not alone.
Let’s talk about how to get you some mental health support and bring more joy into this season…

Are you a political guru? Or maybe you’re here to find new restaurants to enjoy. Possibly, it’s a little of both—searching for a great local coffee shop to peruse your news.
