Election Day Update: Voting kicks off in Virginia with few issues

November 5, 2024

Eleven voters in Richmond got ballots with only federal elections on them but Virginia’s Department of Elections says the matter was resolved.

Election Day in Virginia began with little to no issues, according to the state’s Department of Elections.

Speaking at the first of three press briefings today, state Department of Elections Commissioner Susan Beals said 11 voters in Richmond’s Gilpin Court precinct got ballots that only had federal elections on them. Beals said the matter was resolved.

More than 6 million people are registered to vote in Virginia, and as of this morning, about 2.3 million had already cast their ballots through early voting. There are 126,266 mail-in ballots that have yet to be returned.

Asked if there was an updated figure for the number of people kicked off Virginia’s voter rolls, Beals said the purge program ended on Oct. 14. That means the total number of people impacted by Gov. Glenn Yougkin’s voter purge program was about 1,600 voters.
